Lead
Toxic element
Lead is a heavy metal which is widely used, especially around old motorways,
cities and villages. Lead is less easily absorbable by plants than for example
cadmium. The lead which is absorbed by plants is curbed by a high pH, a high
content of organic matter and a high amount of phosphate in the soil, as is
the assimilation of other heavy metals.
At present the emission of lead by air has become considerably less serious.
Lead is hard to wash out, and relatively little of it is carried off by the
harvest. Due to the uptake through dust and through children (hand-mouth behaviour)
the soil is not suitable for a vegetable garden if it contains an amount of
lead of 150 mg/kg or higher. The determination which is used for lead in this
research is the total amount.
