Active iron

Trace element and disturbing element

A plot of land with a low pH and / or a parcel with water logging virtually always contains has a higher amount of mobile iron. By working on a better drainage of water or by raising the pH, a lowering of the (harmful) mobile iron can be expected.

Fixation and competition:
If the content of iron is too high, then the phosphate is fixed into a iron phosphate which is not absorbable for plants. A high iron content in the soil will compete with other elements like copper and zinc, the latter will be less easily absorbed by plants.

Bog-ore
Some soils contain a lot of bog-ore. If the soil is aired and drained sufficiently, then the content of iron in these soils which are rich with iron will be fairly normal and it will not cause phosphate-fixation. The total content of iron is only of minor importance.

Active Aluminium

Toxic element for roots.
If the content of (mobile) aluminium is high, then the development of roots is slowed down tremendously. It fixes phosphate into a form which is not absorbable for plants, just as iron does. Sometimes a high aluminium is correlated to a compaction in the soil. When the pH is low, the active aluminium concentration in the soil is higher.
